Are you stressed out and tired all the time? Does your life feel like a runaway freight train that never stops long enough for you to catch a breath? Is the idea of giving up tempting you even in areas of your life that you consider non-negotiable?
I’ve totally been there…
Hi! I’m Heather.
I’m a teacher, and I live a pretty simple life with my husband and 2 children.
But my life wasn’t always this simple. In fact, it was utter chaos that plunged me into this simple life. My husband and I lived a modest life. We had a home and enough possessions to keep us happy.
And then my life turned upside-down.
I can still clearly picture the day. I had just read an article about a woman who had been diagnosed with a neurological degenerative disease called A.L.S, a rare disease that gradually shuts down the nervous system until the person becomes a prisoner in their own body, until they become paralyzed.
I was stunned. Scared. The similarities between this woman and the symptoms my dad had been displaying where just too similar. A trip to the neurologist confirmed it: My dad, my best friend and guide in life, had A.L.S. and would eventually die.
Amid the chaos, we decided we would move in with my parents and help my mom care for my dad. As we started packing, we began to realize just how much stuff we had accumulated over 10 years of marriage.
I started to look at these possessions as a burden. They were holding me back, stopping me from packing up and running to help my parents.
So we began the process of selling everything. And I mean just about everything. If it wasn’t a necessity, it went. As I watched my possessions being hauled away by strangers, something else happened. I started to feel a little of that weight lifted with each item that left. I got a larger glimpse of freedom … freedom from all my stuff.
As my house became emptier and emptier, I could feel the excitement knowing that we would soon be able to move. But we weren’t soon enough. What should have taken years, took only months. Within a mere two months of having been diagnosed, my dad left this earth.
I watched the chaos settle, and I realized that none of my possessions mattered. What I once considered to be treasures were nothing more than “stuff.” Family became the only treasure I wanted to gather around me.
Today, we continue to live simply. We pay attention to what we accumulate, and make sure no possession weighs us down.
My goal for me … my goal for you
My goal is to make life simpler through simple recipes, simple travel ideas, simple DIY for the home, and just overall ideas to make life simpler. It’s all about creating a life you love, and turning your house into a home … simply.
